03 - 1/4 cup granulated sugar
04 - 1/4 teaspoon salt

# How to Make:

01 - Preheat oven to 350°F. Line an 8x8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
02 - Combine flour, melted butter, sugar, and salt in a bowl until crumbly dough forms. Press evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
03 - Bake crust for 10 minutes until lightly set.
04 - Melt semi-sweet chocolate chips with sweetened condensed milk in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly until smooth.
05 - Spread chocolate mixture evenly over the baked crust.
06 - Sprinkle with chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, and coconut if desired.
07 - Bake for an additional 15 minutes until edges are set and center is firm.
08 - Cool completely in the pan. Lift out using parchment paper and cut into 12 bars.

# Helpful Tips:

01 -
  • The bottom layer gets incredibly buttery and shortbread-like while staying sturdy enough to hold everything together
  • That chocolate and condensed milk combo creates a fudge-like texture that sets just enough to cut cleanly but stays soft on your tongue
  • You can throw whatever toppings you have in the pantry on top and they somehow always work
02 -
  • Press the base mixture firmly into the pan using the back of a spoon or the bottom of a measuring cup, or you'll get crumbly edges that fall apart when you try to cut them
  • Don't walk away from the melting chocolate mixture, as condensed milk can scorch easily and develop an off taste that ruins the whole batch
  • These really do need to cool completely before cutting, or you'll end up with a chocolatey mess instead of clean bars
03 -
  • Run your knife under hot water and wipe it dry between cuts for the cleanest, most professional-looking squares
  • Toast your nuts in a dry pan for 3-4 minutes before sprinkling them on top for deeper flavor
